Highlands in the Heart

My heart is in the highlands

The lowlands are gone
My mind is making no bones about it
If my love will not wait
Then I’ll not hesitate
And follow the three kings
Who do not doubt it – do no wrong

Come kisses and runes
Remember your tunes
That play as the bag pipes on stages
And the Loch is not forgotten
By the songs they have begotten
As by Pan who listens throughout the ages

Oh four is the number and the number is six
Who must remember to dance at the jigs
And follow the Pages
Who dance like the sages
And beckon on old ancestor wigs

The caber is tossed
The rope is tugged
And men will be men
In ghost or as rugged
Their faces show lines
Their fathers once wore
As their bodies old sinews
Strong as lions that roar

The place in Glen
Where these favourite men
Pulled hand over hand
Until they won
Echoed with their Heave Ho
The rope tight like a bow
The line that can never be broken

Back through the mists of time
To the devil’s very own crime
These mountains have echoed to fighting
Cain fought Abel
Joseph did his father
Abraham prepared Isaac for the slaughter
But as you walk up Glen Nevis
And shadows leave the skies
The sun sets all men free
In its lighting

Song of the Rocks

 Sat on a boulder

With a sac on my shoulder

Watching the river flow

The air grew colder
And I felt  much older
Remembering my time must go
Let go the past
Like a jet it is fast
And flies by just
So and so

I take out my glass
And look at the lass
Who told me my love
Must be slow

Oh come to the hills
Where the Buzzard shrills
And the birch bark peels its skin
And though time marches on
The last words of its song
Have yet to be fully writ in

With a song on my sleeve
And a one to believe
My heart is free as the crows
Who do all hurry on
In their black and white song
Just as the river that flows

Manna from heaven

The dial tone of eternity, rings on and on
Until God - the operator
Reconnects you
I have run out of money I say
Can I reverse the charges
Sure who are you trying to get through to?
Anyone, Adam, Abraham Cain, Isaac
Jesus?
Jesus doesn't listen
Oh sure he does
No he doesn't he just puts the phone down, I tried him the other Sunday
He has BT call minder, I say my name but he never picks up sometimes
That is very sad, and what about the other prophets?
They are too busy trying to set each other's pants on fire,
Or putting them out.
So what do you want me to do about it?
I don't know just give me some sign, please tell me what I should do now, I need a sign please

Ode to a lightning bolt

Where are you Oh Odin's thunder

With your head up in the clouds

Well isn't it a wonder

Lightning would strike

And you'd be caught under

That bolt from the blue

That has riven this old tree through

And split from its sides its ship-length timbers

Going from the bells

Swinging in the tower

tolling in the wind with all of its power

Where are you now Mr Lightning Bolt?

Impulsivity is your nature

You feel the jolt

The knee jerk reaction

You can feel it in your knees

It will rain tonight

You can hear it in the trees

Get your feet back down to earth

And ground yourself in its dirt

Positive and negative and neutral

All your electrical impulses fuel

This storm, this tension

This heat

Then snap, of course

The live wire sparked

The sky just shorted

And found the easiest possible route

Where are you now the dogs have stopped barking?

Now the moon has stopped arcing.

The lights have stopped lightning.

And the drains have stopped draining.

All the water of the raining

Tell me where are you?

In my love spectroscopy in my love epiphany

Cacophony of kaleidoscopic free verse

Has anything changed?

Is anything worse?

Or are you just,

Down to earth?

Money-go-round

 You know you've got to

Make that will for free

Free that will of yours

It's as easy as 1-2-3

Make that will open some doors

Dill that bill, and kill that fill

Still that Jill

And Gill that mill

Will a pocket, spill a socket

Silly billy pick a pocket

Or three

Make that will for free

Jack and Jill

Ran up the hill

And Will came following after

Jill broke down

And stole Jack's crown

Was then a fool lost to laughter

No one in town saw it coming

They thought they were

The perfect disaster

A storm in a teacup

A Penny farthing rounded up

But too many tandems, and bicycles

Were rejected at that stage

For a bicycle made for two

Cathedral Crash

We were holding onto the Cathedral

Like it was some kind of sin

And all the pigeon martyrs

Sent up their prayers on the wing

Coo cooing in tongues with the saint

The Angels could do with a lick of paint

But gossamer trees will shake

In their Spider web chandeliers

And stand like white skeletons remembering

Did the bough break

The baby fall?

Did they lop off a limb

When England's Head of State

Cut off the body of the Church

Like a hand of an octopus

It grew again in its watery garden

And we saw the car crash photos

Of your tumble

From a tight rope of consciousness

Into the dream scape

Where there are no trees, nor obstacles

Just miles of sea in which to swim

No they did not lop off a limb

They freed living being

Halleilulia to that

Amen

Love conducting

Where are you now the dogs have stopped barking?

Now the moon has stopped arcing.

The lights have stopped lightning.

And the drains have stopped draining.

All the water of the raining

Tell me where are you?

In my love spectroscopy in my love epiphany
